Las Hortencias

The story of Las Hortensias began in the mountains of Dipilto, when our father purchased this farm many years ago. Over time, we came to understand that coffee is not just a crop, but a way of life and a family legacy built on hard work, dedication, and passion. As a family, we work in complete harmony: together we make decisions, face challenges, and celebrate every achievement.
Dipilto boasts a privileged microclimate that few regions in the world can match for coffee production. Thanks to rigorous agronomic management of the plantation and meticulous care at every stage of the wet and dry processing, we produce a washed coffee with a complex profile. Our Red Catuaí expresses clarity, cleanliness, bright acidity, unique sweetness, and a complexity in the cup that faithfully reflects the origin of our land.
Quality begins at harvest, selecting only perfectly ripe cherries handpicked by our team. The process continues with flotation sorting, pulping, controlled fermentation for 24 hours in barrels, and washing with clean water, maintaining strict control over timing and environmental conditions. Subsequently, the coffee is transported to Cafetos de Segovia, where it undergoes prolonged and uniform drying in the sun and under shade on African beds and patios, carefully monitoring the moisture content until it reaches 11%.
With every harvest, we maintain a focus on continuous improvement, strengthening our processes, infrastructure, hygiene, and training for the staff responsible for floating, pulping, temperature control, fermentation, and washing. The entire process culminates in a final selection in the laboratory, where our tasters identify the best lots to be entered into the competition.
The Cup of Excellence represents exactly what we strive for each season: giving a voice to the quiet work of our farm. Participating in this competition requires us to document every decision, raise our standards, and never settle. Beyond the competition itself, it gives us the opportunity to show the world that on this small farm in Dipilto, there is something genuine and unique.
Las Hortensias has participated in several editions of the Cup of Excellence, ranking among the top 15 coffees in Nicaragua in 2020, 2022, 2024, 2025, and 2026. Each participation has been an experience of learning and growth, filled with emotions, nerves, and great challenges, where qualifying always represents an invaluable achievement.
The impact of this recognition has been significant, allowing both our Las Hortensias farm and the community of Buenos Aires, in Dipilto, to be internationally recognized as the source of some of Nicaragua’s finest coffees. Furthermore, our participation in the competition has sparked the interest of specialty importers in Europe and Asia, who have purchased our coffee at auction.
We firmly believe that Nicaragua possesses exceptional coffee that has historically gone unrecognized. Every time a farm like Las Hortensias appears in the ACE results, a new chapter is written in the history of Nicaraguan coffee and the recognition of its origin.
We deeply value the role of CONATRADEC, an organization that is essential for connecting the work of Nicaraguan producers with the international market and making a platform as important as the Cup of Excellence possible.
Our dedication to quality is the driving force that motivates us to continue producing exceptional coffees and to keep positioning Nicaragua on the world stage. We hope that international buyers will enjoy our coffees and appreciate the effort, commitment, and passion of every Nicaraguan producer.
“A coffee that tastes like what it is: Family, Land, and Dipilto.”
