Lot 19: Las Nubes Alex Ureña Marín
Las Nubes is a small farm of 4 hectares located in Santa
María de Dota, San José, Costa Rica. The farm sits at
an elevation of 2,000 meters above sea level and is planted with
Typica Mejorado, Geisha, and SL28 varieties.
The terrain is rocky and well-drained, making it ideal for coffee
cultivation. Harvest takes place during the dry season with the
help of Panamanian workers. Only ripe cherries are handpicked and
then sun-dried on African beds inside greenhouses, which are
located at 2,100 meters above sea level.
The farm is located in a high-altitude area of Santa María
de Dota known as Las Nubes—which means “The
Clouds” in Spanish. The name comes from the region’s
frequent mist and cloud cover, as the area often feels like it's
nestled among the clouds. One feels as if they could touch the
clouds due to the high elevation, and the presence of constant mist
gives the impression of being inside one. This cool, foggy climate,
typical at elevations between 1,800 and 2,500 meters, creates ideal
conditions for producing high-quality coffee.
