In 1953 Mrs. María Figueroa de Argueta, obtained these
lands from the hands of the municipality of Chiantla, in that year
some plants of typical coffee, bourbon and maragogipe were planted,
thus initiating the cultivation of coffee, later in 1977 she
inherited her son Erwin Modesto Argueta Figueroa, who managed to
plant in its entirety the 11.56 blocks of extension with varieties
such as caturra, Green Pache and Red Pache, in 2005 after the
creation of the municipality of Unión Cantinil this farm
passes to that jurisdiction in the village of La Esperanza.
Since 2005 the farm is managed by the third generation of the
family, Erwin Humberto Argueta Herrera who has promoted the
cultivation of coffee thinking about quality, so the productive
processes of the farm are changing along with the training of its
staff, in search of technification and improves productivity. with
the commitment to be environmentally friendly.
In 2012 and in response to the problem of coffee rust in
Guatemala, we saw the need to look for new ways to market coffee,
which is how we began the path towards specialty coffees by
participating in different competitions promoted by Anacafé.
It was in 2014 that we were finalists of the Guatemala Cup of
Excellence, this motivated us to do things better, improve
processes and improve varieties, so after doing some research we
decided to start a batch with the Central American F1
variety.
By 2016, our plantations showed an improvement, the rust was
controlled and we learned to live with it by improving our
practices in the integrated management of rust. This year we
reached the 14th position in the cup of excellence contest.
In 2018 we obtained the 7th. Place in the cup of excellence being
the best traditional Arabica of Guatemala, (Bourbon and
Caturra.)
The farm is constantly evolving, which has allowed us to plant new
varieties of coffee according to the demands of the market, we will
soon have results from these coffee varieties. Currently,
climate change is leading us to be more resilient and we have
adopted the National Coffee Association Program (ANACAFE)
SUSTAINABLE PROFITABILITY, as a basis to face the challenges we
will face.
