Phu Chee Duean Organic Forest-Conservation Coffee Community
Enterprise
Por Sub-district, Wiang Kaen District, Chiang Rai Province
In the past, Phu Chi Duean suffered from severe deforestation,
turning into bald mountains due to shifting cultivation and
monocropping. Because crops like maize require 100% sunlight, vast
forest areas were cleared, heavily impacting both highland and
lowland communities. To introduce coffee to these deforested
slopes, we had to start by restoring the canopy. We promoted
agroforestry by encouraging farmers to plant at least 4 to 5
different types of fruit trees in the same plot. Once sufficient
shade was established, coffee trees were interplanted.
This agricultural transition began around 1984. Today, the lush
green forest has returned, with highland farmers actively planting
trees and uniting to protect the land against further
deforestation. Phu Chi Duean coffee is a 100% organic Arabica
variety, cultivated at altitudes of 1,200 to 1,600 meters above sea
level across the peaks of Phu Chee Duean and Phu Chee Dao. Grown
through methods that harmonize with nature and the community, this
forest-conservation coffee serves as a vital tool to secure a
stable grassroots economy. It directly reduces deforestation,
expands green areas, and mitigates seasonal smog, chemical hazards,
monoculture issues, and socio-economic challenges like drug trade
and crime.
We meticulously selected authentic Typica and Mandheling varieties
from abroad to cultivate within the pristine forests of Phu Chee
Duean, Chiang Rai. Grown at altitudes between 1,300 and 1,600
meters above sea level, our coffee thrives under perfect
microclimates and natural conditions, capturing the true essence of
a sustainable environment.
