Lot 6: Finca Momokømo Roque Sánchez Cruz
Rancho Momokømo is located in Coapilla, in the northern mountains of Chiapas, Mexico, at 1,480 meters above sea level. This region is part of the ancestral land of the Zoque people, surrounded by pine-covered hills and a beautiful natural lagoon known as Laguna Verde. Traditionally, the area has been used for extensive cattle ranching and the cultivation of maize and beans.
Our story began in 2019, as part of an agroecological initiative to move away from monocultures and toward more sustainable land use. Supported by Mexico’s Sembrando Vida program, we transitioned our land from grain production and grazing to the cultivation of specialty coffee under an agroforestry system.
We planted our first coffee trees—Marsellesa and Costa Rica 95—alongside native and beneficial plants such as Heliocarpus (jonote), Inga (chelel, jinicuil), bananas, pines, guachipilín, and traditional crops like cassava, maize, and beans. This creates a balanced, biodiverse environment that nourishes the soil and protects local ecosystems.
Rancho Momokømo, like many of the 200 small coffee farms in Coapilla, is a family-run operation. We use eco-friendly and low-impact techniques, including the use of organic inputs like bocashi, bioles, and legumes to enrich the soil. Our coffee trees are planted along contour lines to prevent erosion and protect water sources.
For us, coffee farming is an act of love for the land. Nature gives us life, and we work to return the favor by caring for it in every step of our process.
Twelve years ago, many farmers in our region abandoned coffee due to falling prices and the impact of coffee leaf rust. Fields were converted to pasture or logging. But today, with the implementation of agroforestry, we are proving that another way of farming is possible. As guardians of the forest, we believe our work deserves recognition and fair value—because we are not only producing food, but also protecting the environment for future generations.
Our coffee is specialty grade, produced through agroecological methods, selectively harvested at peak ripeness, washed with clean water using traditional techniques, sun-dried on solar dryers, and stored in hermetically sealed bags to maintain its quality.
In 2024, we proudly participated in the 11th Cup of Excellence Mexico, where our dedication was rewarded with second place and the Presidential Coffee designation.
From Coapilla to the world, we are Momokømo—proud guardians of an exceptional flavor.
